New Self-Preserving Lush Skincare

Formulated to support the skin’s natural microbiome

Lush Co-founder and Product Inventor, Helen Ambrosen has created self-preserving formulations of much loved Lush moisturisers and Ultrabland cleanser to nourish both your complexion and the protective microorganisms that live there.

Modern lifestyles have drastically impacted the health of our skin. When it comes to cosmetics, research has found that products with a high level of synthetics deplete the natural diversity of your microbiome.

A microbiome whisperer, Helen has been navigating the complex science of skincare to create effective products for over forty five years. She pioneered Lush’s use of ingredients and meticulous formulation to create stable products that stay fresh without the use of synthetic preservatives – a concept she termed ‘self-preserving’.

It’s important to look after the helpful microflora that live on our skin and defend against invading bacterial pathogens. We use minimal preservatives in our products when we have to and we have been working hard to remove preservatives from products wherever we can over the decades. These versions are just as effective with all the goodness and no preservative content.

What is your microbiome?

Your microbiome is unique to you, a community of friendly bacteria and microorganisms that care for the skin and offer protection against the microorganisms that can cause disease. When we try to improve the appearance or texture of our skin surface, we can alter its conditions which then disrupts the microbiome.

Timeless skin care to see you through your lifetime

Skincare has been a lifetime journey for some of the Lush founders who have tried, tested and consistently used the products they created, noticing the effects on their skin over a lifetime. These new self-preserving products have been formulated to support the skin’s natural functions while having minimal interference.

Just as we’re starting to understand how all the microorganisms in our gut are very important to our health, all the microorganisms on our skin are very important to our health too
