Bubbles with a cause

Latest Lush bubble bar to support human rights activists and land defenders in Mexico.

Key to this year’s Día De Muertos collection is the newly-created Damas Del Sol bubble bar. Inspired by the late Mexican  environmental activist Homero Gómez’s love and dedication to preserving the Monarch butterflies in Michoacán, Mexico and the beautiful forests they inhabit,  seventy-five percent of the purchase price (minus the taxes) from this product will be granted to Mexican-based lawyers and advocates who provide legal support to human rights activists, land defenders and water protectors facing unjust criminalisation and threat.

Ana Oviedo, from Lush’s  Leeds store, joined the Co-Create program and helped to create the  Damas del Sol bubbler and says,

“This product is a homage to Homero Gómez for all his love, work and passion to preserve the Monarca butterflies and the beautiful forests in Michoacán, México. He was a very loved activist who spent most of his time studying, understanding and protecting the Monarca butterflies, his ‘ladies of the sun’, as he used to call them.”

Homero Gomez’s disappearance and subsequent murder was deeply shocking, but tragically, not an isolated incident. His murder has increased awareness of the desperate need for funding and legal support for those who continue to fearlessly advocate for land protection and human rights against organised crime.

A new era of charitable giving

At the end of September, Lush reached the significant milestone of over £100 million in donations through various giving streams, with the overwhelming amount coming from its flagship product, Charity Pot. Over its 17 years, it   raised £76 million in donations, distributed across 17,000 grants globally. The business felt that this was the right time to reflect on charitable giving as a whole and assess the funding needed to meet the current challenges the world faces at this critical time.

To support this,  Lush has introduced a new product format of giving, enabling multiple exciting new products available at any one time  to support important causes around the world connected to human rights, animal protection  and the environment.
Another example of this alongside Damas del Sol Bubble Bar  is Watermelon Slice soap where of the profits are being donated to childhood mental health services in Palestine.
