The experience includes getting hands on, making Lush’s bestselling Angels On Bare Skin cleanser to take home.
Meet Your Microbiome: free 45-minute skincare service
- Make (and take home) your own fresh cleanser
- Free on-face skincare application and consultation
- Insights into your skin and its microbiome
- A closer look at why we like our products fresh, not sterile
“We’re thrilled to be offering the free workshop as part of our commitment to empower customers with knowledge about their skin. At Lush, we believe skincare should be personal and this experience allows people to get hands-on with fresh ingredients while gaining insights into their own unique microbiome.
We want everyone to feel confident in making informed choices about their skincare, and what better way to do that than by heading into your local Lush shop and experiencing it for themselves.”
– Kasey Swithenbank, Head of retail stores, UK&I
What is the microbiome?
Much like the forests and seas of planet earth, the microbiome is the skin’s own ecosystem and an essential part of the skin barrier. It’s a unique community of bacteria, fungi, viruses and yeast that live on your skin. Each square centimetre contains approximately one million microorganisms that form an important part of your skin barrier. They compete for food and resources and make it harder for pathogens to move in.
The microbiome is established at birth when you receive important ‘kickstarter’ microbiota from your birthing parent. But, as we grow, hormones, age, lifestyle, environment and ethnicity also inform the microbial differences that make us unique. The unique makeup of your microbiome also varies wildly in different body sites, meaning you’ll find different abundances of life from your head to your toes.

Lush Co-Founder and Product Inventor Helen Ambrosen is passionate about making fresh, effective skincare for all ages. While Lush has always created solid products that require no preservatives, like bath bombs, bubble bars, massage bars and more, it was Helen who pioneered Lush’s self-preserving skincare formulas. These are products formulated to stay fresh, effective and safe without synthetic preservatives. In 2023, an amazing 84 percent of Lush’s year-round products were self-preserving.
Lush was built on the premise that we want to get the freshest ingredients into products and onto your skin as quickly as possible. The process includes meticulous product formulation, a panel of human testers, in-house and external microbiology testing, speedy dispatch from factories, and shorter use-by dates. All of this, we believe, gives the customer a better final product. In exchange for a shorter shelf life, and sometimes a bit of space in your fridge, customers get products packed full of effectiveness, not preservatives.
