LUSH and
Planet for All Revealed Animal Cruelty in the Egg Industry

(Hong Kong – June 19, 2025) LUSH partnered with Planet for All, Hong Kong’s first non-profit organization dedicated to farmed animal welfare, for a major Media Event on 19th June at the LUSH Causeway Bay store, with Vegetarian Food Asia and Taste of Veg attending as supporting organisations. Themed Cage-Free Hong Kong, Hong Kong’s first laying hen welfare campaign, the Media Event garnered support from various animal-loving public figures, including Hong Kong badminton player and Olympian Tse Ying Suet, singer Adrian Chau, and model Hidy Yu. The Media Event exposed the cruelty and public health risks associated with the battery cage system in the egg industry, urging the adoption of cage-free egg sourcing by businesses and consumers, based on ethical, food safety, and sustainability concerns.
Conscious Businesses Champion Cage-Free Eggs: LUSH, Vegetarian Food Asia and Taste of Veg Support the Movement
Established 30 years ago, LUSH has always championed animal rights, supporting various animal protection initiatives. Miranda Cheung, LUSH Hong Kong & Macau Managing Director, shared: “LUSH is committed to defending animal rights. We have removed eggs from all products since 2019, transitioning to plant-based ingredients like aquafaba for products such as hair treatment, demonstrating that we can create effective products without harming animals. We fully back Planet for All’s cage-free advocacy, and we firmly believe that businesses must take responsibility by transforming their procurement practices for better animal welfare.”
Seiko Lee, General Manager of Taste of Veg, a supporting organization for the event, stated: “As a long-standing strategic partner of Vegetarian Food Asia, we have observed a continuous rise in both exhibitor and participant numbers. Our previous survey on Hong Kong’s vegetarian population also revealed that the proportion of vegetarians and flexitarians in Hong Kong has risen from 20% in 2014 to 75% in 2023. This indicates that Hong Kong citizens’ awareness of vegetarianism and animal protection is rising rapidly, and businesses are adapting by offering more welfare-friendly products to attract consumers.” As public concern for animal welfare grows, businesses are responsible for actively transitioning to cage-free practices, thereby meeting consumer expectations.
Multiple Public Figures Attended, Shredding Light on Laying Hen Welfare
The event attracted various public figures, including Hong Kong badminton player and Olympian Tse Ying Suet; singer Adrian Chau, a long-time vegetarian; and model Hidy Yu. After watching a video about battery cage cruelty, Tse Ying Suet stated in an interview: “As an athlete, I’ve had many injuries myself. Sometimes when I sit cross-legged for a long time at home, I feel pain the moment I stand up. So, I truly cannot imagine what it’s like for them (hens), not just for a moment, but for their entire lives spent growing up in that place.”
Wendy Chan, Director of Corporate Partnerships & Campaigns at Planet for All, explained: “Gathering support from different celebrities, our event aimed to raise animal welfare awareness. We collaborated with local designers Brian Lee and Eva Leung to create a Battery Cage Experience Zone. A life-sized storefront display is featured at LUSH Causeway Bay as well. We hope visitors will reflect on their consumer habits and be inspired to make a positive change.” The Battery Cage Experience Zone on the upper floor of LUSH Causeway Bay will be open to the public until the end of June. Additionally, a Cage-Free Hong Kong Exhibition will be held at the LUSH K11 store until the end of July. Wendy urged: “We hope that after understanding the cruelty of the egg industry, citizens can help speak up for the hens by signing our petition.”
World’s Largest Egg Investigation Warns of Public Health Disaster
Just before the Media Event, the Open Wing Alliance released the world’s first largest egg investigation.“This investigation exposes the scale of suffering in the supply chains of major Asian food companies,” said Jonathon Tree, Asia-Pacific Regional Manager of The Open Wing Alliance. “These cages are not only cruel, they may harbor the next public health disaster.” In fact, over 35 countries, including the UK, New Zealand, and Switzerland, have already banned battery cages. Hens in battery cages live in spaces smaller than an A4 sheet of paper, unable to move freely or spread their wings. Battery cage eggs also pose serious public health risks, as a study shows that overcrowded living conditions significantly increase the spread of diseases, such as avian flu.
Good Egg Award to be Launched in Hong Kong to Recognize Corporate Cage-Free Commitments
Ethical sourcing has become a new trend among corporations as public awareness of animal welfare surges. Over 70 companies in Hong Kong have already committed to cage-free sourcing, including The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, IKEA, and TamJai SamGor. Leveraging this positive atmosphere for corporate cage-free transitions, Planet for All is collaborating with Compassion in World Farming this year to launch the globally renowned Good Egg Award in Hong Kong. The award recognizes catering, retail, and food companies that publicly commit to fully adopting cage-free eggs within five years. Since its establishment in 2007, the Good Egg Award has been highly respected internationally, with global brands such as IKEA, Marks & Spencer, and Starbucks having previously participated and won the award.
All-rounded Actions under Cage-Free Hong Kong to Drive Laying Hen Welfare
This Media Event gained strong support from various parties, hoping to boost hen welfare awareness among the public. With public exhibitions at LUSH stores following the Media Event, and the Good Egg Award to facilitate corporate transitions, Cage-Free Hong Kong is anticipated to be key to driving cage-free egg sourcing in Hong Kong, encouraging ethical sourcing across all sectors.
